Taking the time to discover a new food by tasting it in different forms is the goal of sensory workshops organized at La Fontaine kindergarten in Saint-André, in the North. On the menu this morning, for the students of large section: the cabbages!

Sweet, cabbage?

After apples, endive or parsnip in previous workshops, children today discover a vegetable that they rarely enjoy: cabbage. For twenty minutes, Dorothée and Johanna, the two animators, will make them taste, red cabbage, white cabbage and kale. First step: touch. Antoine, Lola and Elisa check if the leaves are smooth or bumpy.

Good mood at the table!

While Léo (on the right) does not seem to like the smell of cabbage, Raphaëlle and Corentin have fun: "In the first session, it was not so obvious but today, the children know us and we they understand the principle and are very open to novelty, "explains Dorothée, one of the facilitators.

Hmmmm, what does it smell like?

After touching the cabbages, Alexis takes pleasure in feeling them. White cabbage or kale, what's the difference?

What do you think ?

At these workshops, the children are gathered in small groups, which allows them to express their impressions. Cecile, their mistress, is the first surprised by their progress: "Some children, shy in class, speak much more during these sessions."

 

Which piece to choose?

To encourage children to taste, the facilitators let them choose the piece that suits them. Yanis hesitates but ends up getting started.

Oh, black teeth ...

For Esteban and Hugo, the tasting is a part of fun: the red cabbage makes their teeth all black! "We never force them to taste but we encourage them to do it." The nuance is important, the children also know that if they do not like, they have the right to spit out, which reassures them, "says Dorothée.

Over here the good soup!

After having felt it with care, Valentine tastes the kale soup. First gently, then with appetite. For facilitators, one of the keys to awakening to taste is to offer children a food in different forms to give them a chance to love it. To meditate at home ...

Puree, no thanks!

If Valentine feasted with the soup, Raphaëlle is not really convinced by the mashed white cabbage, a little strong in taste. At the end of the workshop, she will note her impression on a small booklet that will be given to her parents so they can recount the recipes of the day with the family.

Cabbage ... Curry!

Last taste discovery of the day: cabbage cake with curry and honey. An unusual flavor that pleases Quentin a lot: "The pie is always all or nothing: either they love or they hate," Dorothea fun. Convinced by the interest of the project, the school created an educational garden at the beginning of the year. Next year, students will enjoy the vegetables they plant themselves.
